Overview

What Is the PSB LBO Recruitment 2026?

Punjab & Sind Bank — a Government of India undertaking — has officially opened its Lateral Recruitment of Local Bank Officers (LBO) in the JMGS-I cadre. The bank is hiring 1,000 officers across 17 states, and the application window is open from today.

The word lateral is key here. This is not a fresher-level drive. The bank wants people who are already working as officers in scheduled commercial banks or Regional Rural Banks. You bring your experience; the bank gives you a permanent government job with a clear career path.

"Each officer is hired for a specific state, posted in that state, and is expected to be fluent in its local language — which is why every state has a mandatory language requirement."

The most critical rule upfront: you can apply for only one state. You cannot apply for multiple states, and once you submit your application, your state and category choices are locked permanently.

Eligibility

Who Can Apply? — Eligibility Criteria Explained Clearly

1. Nationality

You must be an Indian citizen. Citizens of Nepal, Bhutan, Tibetan refugees who arrived before January 1, 1962, and people of Indian origin from specific countries may also be eligible — but they need a Government of India eligibility certificate.

2. Age Limit (Cut-off: March 1, 2026)

You must have been born between March 2, 1996 and March 1, 2006 (both dates inclusive).

In simple terms: minimum 20 years, maximum 30 years as on the cut-off date.

Age Relaxation — Reserved & Other Categories

CategoryYears of Relaxation
SC / ST+5 Years
OBC (Non-creamy layer)+3 Years
Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD)+10 Years
Persons affected by 1984 riots+5 Years
Ex-Servicemen (min. 5 years military service)+5 Years

3. Educational Qualification

Minimum: A graduation degree in any discipline from a Government-recognized university. You must hold a valid marksheet or degree certificate on the day of registration. CGPA holders must convert their score to percentage as per their university's norms.

4. Work Experience — The Core Requirement

Minimum 18 months of branch experience as an officer in:

  • Any Scheduled Commercial Bank (SBI, PNB, BOB, HDFC, ICICI, etc.), OR
  • Any Regional Rural Bank (RRB) listed in the Second Schedule of the RBI

Experience cut-off date: April 20, 2026. Experience must be post-graduation and as an officer — not as clerical or sub-staff.

5. CIBIL Score

You need a minimum CIBIL score of 650 at the time of joining. Get your CIBIL report from your account-holding bank and keep it ready for document verification. If your score is lower, start clearing dues now.

Compensation

Salary, Pay Scale & What You'll Actually Earn

JMGS-I Pay Scale
₹48,480 → ₹85,920
Scale: ₹48,480 – 2000×7 – ₹62,480 – 2340×2 – ₹67,160 – 2680×7 – ₹85,920

LBO officers don't start at the bottom of this scale. You join with 3 additional increments on Day 1, making your actual starting basic pay higher than ₹48,480. If you hold JAIIB or CAIIB certifications, those increment benefits are protected and reflected in your salary from joining itself.

Allowances & Other Benefits

💰 Financial Allowances

  • Dearness Allowance (DA)
  • HRA or Leased Accommodation
  • City Compensatory Allowance (CCA)
  • Special Allowance + DA on it
  • JAIIB / CAIIB increment protection

🏥 Other Benefits

  • Medical benefits for self & family
  • Leave Travel Concession (LTC)
  • Gratuity & Provident Fund
  • Promotion under bank's general cadre

All allowances depend on place of posting and applicable rules at that time. Metro postings carry higher HRA than semi-urban or rural postings.

Service Conditions

Bond, Probation & Career Path — Know Before You Sign

GradeBond AmountBond PeriodProbation
JMGS-I Equivalent to 3 months' gross salary (basic + DA + special allowance + DA on special allowance) 3 Years 6 Months
Resignation clause: If you leave before completing 3 years, you pay back the bond amount. You also need one guarantor (surety) of equal value before joining.

Career Path Restrictions for LBO Officers

Until you are promoted to SMGS-IV grade or complete 12 years of service (whichever is earlier), you are NOT eligible for:
  • Inter-state transfers
  • Posting at Zonal / Head Office level
  • Special branch postings (Currency Chest, ARB, RCC, etc.)
  • Deputation to other organisations

This isn't necessarily a disadvantage — many officers prefer state-level stability. But if Head Office or all-India transfers are on your career wishlist, you'll need to wait for promotion or 12 years.

Selection Process

How Are Candidates Selected? — All 6 Stages

Every stage is eliminatory. Clearing one does not automatically move you to the next — you need to qualify each stage independently.

1
Online Written Test

120 questions · 120 marks · 120 minutes. Four sections. This is the biggest filter — you must score the minimum in every individual section, not just in the total.

2
Screening / Shortlisting

Based on written test performance, candidates are shortlisted state-wise and category-wise for the interview. Just passing isn't enough — your rank among your peers matters.

3
Personal Interview

Conducted in New Delhi (unless specified otherwise). Call letters are sent by email only. You attend at your own cost. Minimum qualifying marks apply — those who don't clear are out.

4
Final Merit List Preparation

Written test carries 70% weightage, interview carries 30% weightage. Marks out of 120 are converted to 70; interview marks out of 50 are converted to 30. Final list is out of 100.

5
Local Language Proficiency Test

Conducted for provisionally selected candidates before joining. Tests reading, writing, and understanding of the state's local language. Exempted if you studied that language in Class 10 or 12.

6
Document Verification & Joining Formalities

All originals verified. Medical fitness, police verification, and execution of service bond — all happen here before your actual joining date.

Tie-breaking rule: If two candidates score identically at the cut-off point, they are ranked by age in descending order — older candidate gets the higher rank.

Sectional Cut-offs — Don't Neglect Any Section

General / EWS Category

40%

minimum in each section

SC / ST / OBC / PwBD

35%

minimum in each section

Banking Knowledge (40 marks) is your biggest weapon. As an existing bank officer, this is where you have a natural edge over other candidates. Focus heavily on RBI policies, JAIIB concepts, NPA and credit management, KYC/AML norms, and recent banking developments.
Documents

Documents You'll Need — Don't Be Caught Unprepared

At the Exam Centre

  • Printed exam call letter (downloaded from bank website)
  • Original photo ID — PAN Card, Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID, Driving Licence, or Employee ID (Ration Card and Learner's Licence are NOT accepted)

At Document Verification (Post-Interview)

  • Class 10 certificate / marksheet as Date of Birth proof
  • Printout of interview call letter and online application form
  • All educational certificates from Class 10 onwards (semester-wise marksheets + graduation / PG degree)
  • Work experience certificates + NOC from your current employer
  • Caste / category certificate (OBC must have Non-Creamy Layer clause; caste must match Central List)
  • EWS Income & Asset Certificate (must be valid at time of application)
  • Disability certificate from District Medical Board (if applicable)
  • Two recent passport-size photographs (matching the application photo)
  • CIBIL report drawn from your account-holding bank
  • Valid photo ID proof with permanent address
OBC Candidates — Critical: Your OBC certificate must contain the "Non-Creamy Layer" clause, and your caste name must match letter-for-letter with the Central Government's OBC list for your state at www.ncbc.co.in. A spelling mismatch will get your candidature cancelled — and you won't be allowed to apply under General category either.
Application Fee

Application Fee — Category-wise Charges

CategoryFee
SC / ST / PwBD₹100 + Applicable Taxes + Gateway Charges
General / EWS / OBC₹850 + Applicable Taxes + Gateway Charges

Payment is online only — UPI, net banking, debit/credit cards are accepted. Cash, cheques, and demand drafts will not be accepted under any circumstances. The fee is non-refundable — even if the bank cancels the entire process.

Critical Warnings — Mistakes That Cost Candidature

  • Apply for one state only. Only your last valid application counts. You lose any earlier fee paid on a different state application.
  • Don't wait for April 20. Bank portals crash on deadline day. Apply by April 15 at the latest to be safe.
  • Never sign in capital letters. Your signature on the application, call letter, and attendance sheet must be identical cursive handwriting throughout the entire process.
  • No mehndi or ink on your hands before the exam — biometric thumb impressions are captured and inconsistencies lead to rejection.
  • Check your CIBIL score today. If it's below 650, start improving it. Clear any outstanding dues or defaults before joining.
  • Don't send documents to the bank directly. No documents are to be posted or emailed to the bank before or after the interview. All submission happens at designated verification stages only.
  • Maintain the same appearance. Any photo mismatch at any stage can lead to disqualification. Don't change your look drastically between application and interview.
Check your Class 10 marksheet right now. If the state's local language appears as a subject, you are exempt from the language proficiency test. If not, start brushing up on it — failing the language test means no appointment, regardless of your written exam or interview rank.
